Careful With Your Antifreeze (08/27/08)
Most antifreeze contains ethylene glycol. This is toxic to start with and becomes even more so as it picks up toxic substances such as benzene and lead from your car's engine. Keep this lethal mixture tightly sealed in a safe place, as it's deadly to animals and children, who might be attracted by its sweet taste. Never pour used antifreeze into your trash can, down drains or sewers, or onto the ground. Instead, take it to a recycling center or hazardous waste depot, or ask your local service station or car dealer if they can deal with it. Look for propylene glycol-based antifreeze, which is less toxic than the commonly used ethylene glycol versions. (Joanna Yarrow)
