Show Your Cans Who's Boss (08/28/08)

Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV set for three hours.  Help make the process even more efficient by crushing your cans before collection.  This means that they take up less space, which reduces the number of trips required to take them to the recycling plant.  (The same principle applies to plastic bottles.) Crushing cans with your own strength is a great way to release frustration (as long as you take care with sharp edges), but you can also get a can crusher - a simple gadget that makes short work of even the sturdiest cans.  (Joanna Yarrow)
