Smart Planting (09/14/08)
For chemical-free gardening success, work with mother nature rather than trying to defy her. Choose naturally pest-resistant varieties of plants, and when deciding where to position them, take account of the type of soil and amount of sun and moisture that suit them best. If they're in the right conditions, they'll grow strong and be better able to defend themselves against pests and disease. To give additional protection, you could try companion planting. This involves mixing together plants that provide useful nutrients for each other or attract predators to prey on the other's pests -- for example, tomatoes with carrots, garlic with roses, or nasturtiums with pumpkins, cucumbers, and squash.
