Outdoor Learning (10/25/08)
Modern (particularly urban) environments are often devoid of dedicated places for children and young people to explore and enjoy nature. Help to redress the balance by encouraging your local school or community group to develop outdoor learning centers in your neighborhood or on school grounds. To begin with, try creating a discovery trail, butterfly garden, sundial, weather station, acid-rain monitor, bird hide, pond, or interpretation materials. Make sure you get the children who'll be using the facilities involved in making them so they end up with something they really like and cherish. (Joanna Yarrow)
