Polystyrene is a ubiquitous part of convenience culture, cropping up in everything from disposable coffee cups to fruit wrappers, egg boxes, and packing cases. This synthetic material is made from valuable petrochemicals and doesn't biodegrade, so try to use it as little as possible. Some do, but most don't - because it's so bulky, transportation and processing are prohibitively expensive. (Joanna Yarrow)
